Born in Milan on 13 January 1973, Gianluigi Galli - nicknamed 'Gigi' - drove a Fiat Uno for the first time at the age of twenty.
The following year, Gigi took part in his first race, the Rallye de la Valtellina at the wheel of a Peugeot 309 GTI and finished third in his class. Gigi also drove in a few ice racing events in a Toyota Celica.
In 1995, the Italian competed in the Cinquecento Trophy and achieved good results with Team Rorallysport. The following year, Galli returned for a second season in the Cinquecento Trophy and won the title with a total of five victories.
Galli joined Team Rossi and competed in the 1997 European Rally Championship at the wheel of a Ford Escort Cosworth. The season was a disappointment, his best result was a ninth place at the Rallye d'Ypres in Belgium.
Fortunately, 1998 was a much better year for the Italian. Gianluigi won the Group N Italian Rally Championship in a Mitsubishi Lancer of Team RalliArt Italy - Top Run. With his co-driver Guido D'Amore, Galli also finished sixth in the Production Car World Rally Championship, a performance that he almost matched the following year (7th in the PCWRC).
The Mitsubishi driver clinched the Italian Rally Championship for a second consecutive time in 2000, once again in the Group N category. Galli won a total of seven class victories, including his third consecutive win at the Sanremo Rally. Like in the previous year, Galli also finished seventh in the Production World Rally Championship. 2001 was a difficult year for the Italian. He took part in only two rallies - Monte Carlo and Finland - and retired twice.
Gianluigi took the decision to switch back to a Fiat Punto S1600 in 2002. His results were good once again: he finished with a ninth place in the Junior World Rally Championship and a third position in the Italian Rally Championship.
2003 was a very important year for Galli. He joined the RalliArt Italy team and drove a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII to compete in the Italian Rally Championship and a few events in the World Rally Championship as well (Sweden, Finland and France). His excellent results in Sweden (second in Group N) and Finland (fifth in Group N) convinced Mitsubishi to let him drive a Lancer WRC04 the following year.
After many years of collaboration, Galli made a major step forward by joining the Mitsubishi works team in the World Rally Championship. At the wheel of the new Lancer WRC, Gigi took part to four rallies (Monte Carlo, Mexico, Turkey and Catalunya) and eight rounds of the Production championship in a RalliArt Italy Lancer Evo VIII.
In 2005, Gianluigi Galli will stay at Mitsubishi and will drive the Lancer WRC in selected rounds of the World Rally Championship, alongside Gilles Panizzi and Harri Rovanpera.
